Introduction to G2 and G3 Additional Mathematics (A-Math) in Singapore

With the rollout of Full Subject-Based Banding (SBB) in Singapore secondary schools last year, students now have greater flexibility in choosing subjects that match their strengths and interests. As part of this initiative, G2 and G3 levels of Additional Mathematics (A-Math) are now available to help cater to students with strong interest and aptitude in mathematics.

G2 Additional Mathematics offers a solid bridge between standard math content and more advanced mathematical thinking, focusing on skills like algebraic manipulation, graphs, and basic calculus. G3 Additional Mathematics, on the other hand, builds on these foundations and introduces more abstract and rigorous topics such as trigonometric identities, logarithmic and exponential functions, and differentiation and integration techniques. It is comparable to the traditional O-Level A-Math syllabus.

Musclemath has been a chief asset for me throughout JC. The worksheets, online resources and compiled booklets were instrumental in exposing me to diverse question types and methods. Every lesson is effectively planned and executed, with the tutors laying out the agenda beforehand, focusing on the key question types and allowing different students to move at their chosen pace. The materials are compiled in a very concise and digestible manner that makes them handy for both learning and revision. Mr Tan and Ms Fou are excellent teachers. They write out their workings step-by-step neatly, explain the thought process and include diagrams and proofs, thereby consistently promoting conceptual understanding rather than rote learning. They are also very sensitive to the students’ learning pace. They make it a point to check up on us during breaks or after class if we looked confused during the lesson. When answering questions, they really try to pinpoint the source of confusion and find new ways to explain the concept. They also respond to queries online very quickly, writing out and taking pictures of their method and recording their explanations. The admin staff are very supportive as well, in that they cater to students’ busy schedules by making it easy for us to opt for online lessons over face-to-face ones. They are also prompt in sending answer keys, rearranging classes and answering questions. The Musclemath team has worked closely with me to make sure I get the most out of their lessons, and have been instrumental in my learning.
