Math Quiz- Test Your Knowledge 2026

How strong are your maths fundamentals? Sometimes, the easiest way to find out is not by reading another set of notes, but by attempting a few questions without knowing exactly which topic is being tested.

This short maths quiz covers a mixture of algebra, functions, trigonometry, calculus, probability and sequences. Some questions test calculation, while others test whether you understand the mathematical idea behind the formula.

Try each question before opening the answer. Keep track of your score and see how many you can get right on your first attempt.

Challenge: 10 questions. Try to complete them without referring to your notes or calculator unless the question requires one.

Question 1: Solve for x

3x + 7 = 22

A. 3
B. 5
C. 7
D. 15

Reveal Answer

Answer: B. x = 5

Subtract 7 from both sides to get 3x = 15. Dividing both sides by 3 gives x = 5.

Question 2: Functions

If f(x) = 2x2 − 3, what is f(4)?

A. 13
B. 29
C. 32
D. 61

Reveal Answer

Answer: B. 29

Substitute x = 4 into the function:

f(4) = 2(42) − 3 = 2(16) − 3 = 29.

Question 3: Algebra

Which expression is equivalent to x2 − 9?

A. (x − 9)(x + 1)
B. (x − 3)(x + 3)
C. (x − 3)2
D. (x + 9)(x − 1)

Reveal Answer

Answer: B. (x − 3)(x + 3)

x2 − 9 is a difference of two squares:

x2 − 32 = (x − 3)(x + 3).

Question 4: Trigonometry

If sin θ = 1/2 and 0° ≤ θ ≤ 90°, what is θ?

A. 30°
B. 45°
C. 60°
D. 90°

Reveal Answer

Answer: A. 30°

sin 30° = 1/2, so θ = 30° within the stated interval.

Question 5: Differentiation

Differentiate:

y = 3x3 − 4x2 + 7

A. 9x2 − 8x
B. 9x2 − 4x
C. 3x2 − 8x
D. 9x3 − 8x2

Reveal Answer

Answer: A. 9x2 − 8x

Using the power rule:

d/dx(3x3) = 9x2
d/dx(−4x2) = −8x

The derivative of the constant 7 is 0.

Question 6: Integration

Evaluate:

∫ 6x2 dx

A. 2x3 + C
B. 3x2 + C
C. 6x3 + C
D. 12x + C

Reveal Answer

Answer: A. 2x3 + C

Increase the power from 2 to 3 and divide by the new power:

6 × x3/3 = 2x3.

Remember to include the constant of integration, C.

Question 7: Probability

A fair six-sided die is rolled once. What is the probability of obtaining a number greater than 4?

A. 1/6
B. 1/3
C. 1/2
D. 2/3

Reveal Answer

Answer: B. 1/3

The numbers greater than 4 are 5 and 6. There are therefore 2 favourable outcomes out of 6 possible outcomes.

2/6 = 1/3.

Question 8: Arithmetic Sequences

The first three terms of an arithmetic sequence are:

5, 9, 13, …

What is the 10th term?

A. 37
B. 41
C. 45
D. 49

Reveal Answer

Answer: B. 41

The common difference is 4.

Using an = a1 + (n − 1)d:

a10 = 5 + 9(4) = 41.

Question 9: Logarithms

If log2x = 5, what is x?

A. 10
B. 25
C. 32
D. 64

Reveal Answer

Answer: C. 32

log2x = 5 means:

25 = x.

Therefore, x = 32.

Question 10: Quadratic Equations

A quadratic equation has:

b2 − 4ac < 0

What does this tell you about its roots?

A. It has two distinct real roots.
B. It has one repeated real root.
C. It has no real roots.
D. One of its roots must be zero.

Reveal Answer

Answer: C. It has no real roots.

When b2 − 4ac is negative, the square root term in the quadratic formula is not real. Therefore, the quadratic equation has no real roots.

How Did You Score?

Count the number of questions you answered correctly before revealing the solutions.

9–10 correct: Excellent. Your fundamentals across these topics are looking strong.

7–8 correct: Good work. You have a solid foundation, although there may be a few topics worth revisiting.

4–6 correct: You understand several of the core ideas, but some gaps may become more significant as questions get harder.

0–3 correct: This is a useful signal to revisit your foundations before moving on to more advanced questions.

What Does Your Maths Quiz Score Actually Tell You?

A short maths quiz cannot predict your examination grade. Ten questions cannot represent an entire Secondary or JC Mathematics syllabus.

What it can reveal, however, is whether you can recognise which mathematical idea to use when the topic is not immediately given to you.

This is an important difference between ordinary revision and an actual examination.

When students practise a set of questions immediately after studying a chapter on differentiation, probability or functions, they already have a clue about which method they are expected to use.

In an examination, questions from different topics appear together. Before solving the problem, you first have to recognise what kind of mathematics is required.

Try the Quiz Again in a Few Weeks

If you struggled with several questions, revise the relevant topics and return to a mixed set of questions later.

Do not only practise questions from one chapter at a time. Mixed practice forces you to decide which method is appropriate before you start solving.

That ability becomes increasingly important as you move towards JC Mathematics and H2 Mathematics, where a single question may involve ideas from several parts of the syllabus.

Want a Harder Maths Challenge?

If you scored well, the next step should not simply be more questions of the same difficulty.

Try questions where the method is less obvious, several steps are required, or different mathematical concepts have to be combined. A seperate harder quiz will be available in the upcoming weeks!

Final challenge: Come back to this quiz after a few weeks without looking at your previous answers. If the questions now feel easier, that is a much better sign of improvement than simply remembering the solutions.
