O Level Grading System
O Level Grading System

The Singapore-Cambridge General Certificate of Education Ordinary Level (or Singapore-Cambridge GCE O-Level) is a GCE Ordinary Level examination held annually in Singapore and is jointly conducted by the Ministry of Education (MOE), Singapore Examinations and Assessment Board (SEAB) and the University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate (UCLES).
The 2024 GCE O-Levels results will be released tentatively between Friday, 10 January and Tuesday, 14 January 2025.
The L1R5 (JC Grading System)
The O level Grading System is for JC is calculated with the L1R5, which can be explained as follows:
L1 refers to the Language Subject and is usually English or a Higher Mother Tongue Subject.
*Do note that an ordinary level language cannot be considered as L1.
R5 refers to 5 other relevant subjects. This is based on whichever subject combination is taken, most students will take a combination of:
R1 Humanities Subject (Geography/ History/ Literature)
R2 Mathematics or Science
R3 Another one from the Humanities, Mathematics or Science.
R4,R5 Any 2 best scoring subject.
How to calculate the L1R5?
Simply put, the L1R5 is a calculation of all of the above based on the number behind the letter grades. An example would be as follows:
English – B3
Mother Tongue – B3
Geography – A2
Mathematics – B4
Combined Science (Physics and Bio) – A2
Literature – C5
Total L1R5 = 3 + 3 + 2 + 4 + 2 + 5 = 19
To be eligible for JC, the score must not exceed 20.
The L1R4 (Millennia Institute Grading System)
Similarly, as above the Polytechnic grading system follows the same calculations but only with 4 relevant subjects.
L1: Language Subject
R4: 4 relevant, excluding Chinese.
To be eligible for polytechnics, the score must not exceed 20.
The ELR2B2 System (Polytechnic Grading System)
The ELR2B2 System is the sum of English Language (EL), two relevant subjects (R2), and two best subjects (B2), minus CCA bonus points
EL: English Language
R2: 2 Relevant Subjects
B2: 2 other Best Scoring subjects
The slight difference in calculation is in the “Best Scoring subjects”.
This can include Food and Nutrition/ Arts/ DNT or any other relevant subjects.
To be eligible for polytechnics, the score must not exceed 26.
