Removal of the Mobile Guardian App Device Management
In August, MOE announced that the “Mobile Guardian App Device Management” will be removed from all iPads and Chromebooks.
About the App
The app is pre-downloaded on iPads or Chromebooks for students that use them as personal learning devices. However, it was later discovered that students were unable to access their applications and information stored in their devices.
In addition, “Mobile Guardian’s investigations found that there had been a global cybersecurity incident involving unauthorised access to its platform that affected their customers globally, including those in Singapore”. This has led to:
- 13,000 students in Singapore from 26 secondary schools having their devices wiped remotely by the perpetrator.
Other factors
On a separate occasion, students were facing issues connecting to the Internet and/or receiving error messages due to a human error in configuration by Mobile Guardian.
Perhaps due to the above problems, several “mobile guardian bypass” methods have been devised throughout the year such as php redirects.
In light of the situation and the unfavorable circumstances, MOE has decided to remove the app as a precautionary measure. The ministry has also deployed IT roving teams to schools and provided additional learning resources.
Windows and Microsoft Outage
On July 19, 2024, CrowdStrike rolled out a “content update” to its customers running the “CrowdStrike Falcon endpoint agent on Windows devices, resulting in disruption to organizations worldwide in multiple industries, including travel, banking, healthcare, and retail”. -SCMedia
This was an unprecedented result of an update, which can be said to be a cybersecurity failure due to compromise of confidentiality, integrity and availability.
However, this was not a cyber attack.
On July 30, 2024, Microsoft was again faced with a global outage affecting Microsoft products including email service Outlook and video game Minecraft has been resolved, the technology giant said in an update. -BBC
This was a result of a cyber attack known as DDOS (Distributed Denial of Service) where the perpetrator floods a website or online service with internet traffic in an attempt to throw it offline.
