Education Updates 2026- No Mid-Year Exams, New University Scoring

Education Updates 2026: Key Changes

No Mid-Year Exams, New University Scoring

What It Means for JC Math Students

With the removal of mid-year exams and new university admission score computation beginning this year, many students are understandably feeling uncertain about where they stand.

If you’re feeling unsure, you’re not alone.

No More Mid-Year Exams – What Changed?

Starting from the 2024 JC intake, mid-year examinations were removed for Junior Colleges and Millennia Institute as part of MOE’s shift away from heavy exam reliance and towards deeper learning.

The time saved was meant to be used for more meaningful learning experiences instead of exam preparation.

Additionally:

  • Schools are limited to no more than one weighted assessment per term
  • Mid-year exams are not replaced by more exams

While this was to reduce exam pressure, it had also created a new challenge. Students now have fewer formal checkpoints before prelims and A-levels.

Why This Makes Students Nervous

This concern is already reflected among students since it was implemented. In a discussion on SGExams, students shared that without mid-year exams:

  • There are fewer full exam simulations
  • Students may only sit full-length papers during promos or prelims
  • Some worry this reduces exam readiness

Another common concern raised:

“How to measure your KPI when there is no mid year exam?”

This highlights a key issue:
Students are not just worried about exams, they are worried about not knowing where they stand

The Hidden Challenge: Fewer Checkpoints

Previously, students had regular “checkpoints” to assess whether they were doing well. This includes mid-year exams, promos and finally the prelims.

Now, many students only have smaller assessments, promos and prelims.

With the last major milestones of the prelims being close to A levels, that leads to more uncertainty in the period leading up to the exams.

And that uncertainty often leads to:

  • Delayed studying
  • Overconfidence
  • Or unnecessary anxiety

Another major change beginning 2026:

Under the new system (for graduating students entering University):

  • 3 H2 subjects remain the main scoring components
  • General Paper counts as 10 points
  • The fourth content subject is only counted if it improves the score
  • Mother Tongue is also counted only if it improves the score

This means:

  • Students can focus more on core subjects
  • Less pressure from weaker subjects
  • More flexibility in performance

So How Should Students Assess Their Position Now?

Without mid-year exams, students should rely on:

1. Topic-Based Accuracy

Ask:

  • Do I understand core concepts?
  • Am I making careless mistakes?
  • Can I complete questions under time pressure?

2. Timed Practice

Students should:

  • Attempt timed papers
  • Simulate exam conditions
  • Track performance over time

3. Conceptual Confidence

Instead of relying on exam scores, ask:

  • Can I solve unfamiliar questions?
  • Can I explain concepts clearly?

These are often better indicators than a single exam.

Why the June Holidays Matter Even More Now

With the removal of mid-year examinations, students now have fewer formal checkpoints to assess their progress. As a result, the June holidays become even more important in the academic calendar.

Instead of preparing for a mid-year exam, the June period now serves as a natural reset point. It allows students to reflect on what they have learned so far, identify weaker areas, and strengthen their foundations before the second half of the year begins. This is especially important in JC Math, where topics build quickly and gaps can compound over time.

Students who use the June holidays effectively are often able to identify gaps early, strengthen core concepts, and improve their readiness for upcoming assessments. More importantly, they gain confidence moving into the months ahead, rather than trying to catch up later under greater pressure.

In many ways, the June holidays have now become the unofficial mid-year checkpoint — not through exams, but through structured revision and focused consolidation.

This is also why the June Holiday JC Math Programme 2026 at MuscleMath was designed specifically for this period. By focusing on targeted revision, accuracy, and exam-tested methods, students can use the June holidays as a meaningful checkpoint to assess their progress and prepare for the second half of the year.
