Important dates and key details for Secondary 1 school posting in Singapore 2025

Secondary School S1 Posting Dates

sECONDARY SCHOOL POSTING S1

Transitioning from primary school to secondary school is a major step — and the posting process involves strict timelines and meaningful choices. Understanding the key dates and what’s required ensures your child’s journey begins smoothly.

Key Dates to Remember for S1 Posting

It’s critical that all submissions and school-choice decisions are made within this timeframe. Delays or missing the window can lead to less favourable placement based on remaining vacancies.

What You Must Do During the Submission Stage

  • Once PSLE results are out, students receive an S1 Option Form and an Eligibility Letter from their primary school.

  • You must discuss with your child their preferences, strengths and learning style. Think ahead about what kind of secondary school environment will suit them best.

  • Choose up to six secondary schools in order of preference and submit them via the S1 Portal. Ensure the order reflects your true priorities.

  • Use the official portal: parents log in via Singpass. Only one parent needs to submit. If you need assistance, contact the primary school before the deadline.

Consider Subject Level Choices (G1 / G2 / G3) Early in the Process

Beyond choosing a secondary school, parents and students should also be aware that subject levels (G1, G2, G3) are an important part of the transition and are decided after the posting outcome is released.

After your child is posted to a secondary school, the school will assess the student’s PSLE subject AL scores and recommend suitable starting levels for each subject.

This usually takes place during the Secondary 1 orientation period or in the first few weeks of Term 1. Parents and students may be invited to discuss or confirm these levels, especially if there is flexibility based on performance and readiness.

When considering whether to start a subject at G1, G2 or G3 level, families should think beyond just academic pride and consider:

  • The student’s actual strength and confidence in the subject.

  • The school’s reputation in certain subjects (For example, Catholic High may be stronger in STEM subjects and Chinese).

  • Ability to cope with faster pace and heavier workload (especially at G3, refer to the syllabus for an idea of the topics.)

  • Long-term subject pathway expectations (e.g. eligibility for O-Level subjects later)

  • Willingness to seek help and stay consistent with revision

  • Emotional readiness to handle pressure and competition

What Parents and Students Should Focus On

  • Fit over prestige: Rather than just aiming for the top ranked school, consider the school’s culture, subject offerings, CCA (co-curricular activities), and the commute.

  • Strategic choices: Ensure you include a mix of aspirational, realistic and safe schools within your six choices. Including at least two schools where the previous year’s COP was slightly below your child’s expected performance helps reduce risk.

  • Choice order matters: In tie-breaker situations, school choice order becomes a deciding factor. A higher-preference listing can increase chances of getting into a preferred school.

  • Stay within deadlines: Missed submission windows or incorrect choices can result in placement at a school with remaining vacancies — which may not be your first choice or nearest location.

  • Prepare for the next stage: Once posting results are out, report to the new school by the stipulated date, purchase books and uniforms, attend orientation and set the right mindset for secondary school.

Final Thoughts for the Transition

The S1 Posting process may feel stressful, but with the right preparation, the main steps are manageable. By understanding the timeline, engaging meaningfully in the school-choice process, and focusing on your child’s best environment, you’ll set them up for a successful start in secondary school.

Remember: placement is just the first step — what matters most is how your child adapts, grows and thrives in their new school setting.
