Key Dates, School Applications & What Students Should Prepare for in the New Year

The release of the O-Level examination results marks one of the most important milestones in a student’s education journey.

It is not only a day of celebration and reflection, but also the beginning of major decisions involving post-secondary pathways such as Junior College (JC), Polytechnic, ITE and specialized schools.

To help students and parents stay organised, here is a complete guide to the important dates, expected open-house periods, and the key preparations needed for the new academic year.

When Are O-Level Results for 2026 Released?

The O-Level results are scheduled for release between Wednesday, January 14, and Friday, January 16, 2026.

Students will receive instructions from their secondary schools about:

  • Reporting time

  • COVID-safe or administrative procedures (if still applicable)

  • What documents to bring (NRIC/EZ-Link card, Passport, etc.)

On the same day, online portals for school applications will open.

JAE (Joint Admissions Exercise): The Most Important Application Window

After the O-Level results are released, students who wish to enter JC, Poly or ITE via JAE must submit their choices.

Typical JAE Application Window

  • Opens: Same afternoon after O-Level results release

  • Closes: ~4 days later

  • Mode: Online via the JAE portal (requires Singpass or JAE PIN)

Students can select:

  • Up to 12 choices across JC/Poly/ITE courses

  • Rank choices clearly based on interest AND entry requirements

When Will Posting Results Be Released?

  • Usually around 3–4 weeks after the JAE application closes

  • Students report to their new school the next working day after posting results

Early Admissions Exercise (EAE) Note

Students who already secured conditional EAE offers still need to confirm eligibility by meeting baseline O-Level requirements.

If they do not meet the minimum grades, the EAE offer will lapse and they must apply via JAE.

After Results: What Students Should Consider Before Selecting Schools

Choosing the right next step involves more than just cut-off points. Students should consider:

1. Long-Term Career Pathway

Does the course or stream align with future goals (university, work, industry specialization)

2. Learning Style

  • JC suits students who prefer academic and theoretical learning.

  • Poly suits those who prefer applied learning, projects and technical depth.

  • ITE suits hands-on learners who want smaller class sizes and job-ready skills.

3. Travel Distance & Environment

A long commute can affect daily focus.
Campus culture also matters — every school has a unique academic pace and personality.

4. Passion & Strengths

Choosing a course just because a friend is going or it is “popular” often leads to dropout or disengagement.
