Infinity is more than just a large number — it is a profound mathematical and philosophical idea that transcends everyday experience. Represented by the symbol ∞, it challenges our notions of quantity, boundaries, and even reality itself.

 

Infinity in Calculus

In calculus, infinity emerges in the study of limits, integrals, and infinite series:

  • Limits help us understand what happens to a function as it approaches a specific value — even if that value is infinitely large or small.


  • For example, the expression:

lim (x → ∞) (1/x) = 0 shows how a value can shrink toward zero without ever reaching it — a concept essential to understanding asymptotic behavior.


– Improper integrals use infinity to calculate the area under curves that stretch indefinitely:

∫ from 1 to ∞ of (1/x²) dx

– Infinite series, such as:

∑ (n = 1 to ∞) of (1/n²) can converge to finite values, revealing the paradox that adding infinitely many terms can still produce a finite sum.

 

Infinity in Set Theory

Set theory explores infinity in a completely different way. Georg Cantor, a pioneer in this field, discovered that:

  • Some infinities are larger than others.

    • For instance, the set of natural numbers N={1,2,3,… } is countably infinite.

    • But the set of real numbers, R is uncountably infinite — a larger type of infinity.

  • Cantor’s Diagonal Argument shows that even if you try to list all real numbers between 0 and 1, there will always be a number not in your list — proving a higher order of infinity.

  • Cardinality is the term used to compare the size of infinite sets — a revolutionary idea in mathematics.

 

Significance of Infinity in O Levels and A Levels

O Level Mathematics (Singapore Context)

At the O Level, the concept of infinity is introduced lightly and usually in the context of:

  • Asymptotes in graph sketching:

    • When drawing rational functions like y=1/x 

    • Vertical and horizontal asymptotes imply a type of “infinite” behavior — the graph gets closer and closer to a line but never touches it.

  • Limits (implicitly) in graph interpretations:

    • Though not formally called “limits,” students are expected to understand how values behave as they grow very large or very small.

Note. While Infinity is not a formal examinable topic, it helps build intuition for higher-level math.

A Level Mathematics

In H2 A Level Math (Syllabus 9758), infinity becomes more formalized and plays a central role in several topics:

  • Calculus:

    • Limits involving infinity (e.g., lim⁡x→∞1/x = 0)

    • Improper integrals where integration bounds go to infinity.

    • Asymptotic behavior in curve sketching.

  • Infinite Series:

    • Students learn how some infinite sums converge to finite values.

    • They calculate and assess convergence/divergence using formulas.
